Purpose

This collection of webpages exists to gather in one place all the information and advice we can share with each other about tasks and trivia related to separating from Hewlett-Packard, above and beyond the information provided by the company directly to departing employees.

We hope this can help you through a difficult and complicated experience.

History

The original title of this document, a single webpage, was: HP Work Force Restructuring (WFR, Redeployment) Collected Knowledge. It focused on HP northern Colorado layoffs. It was written by Alan Silverstein, " ajs@frii.com, beginning in fall 2002. It eventually grew to two webpages totalling over 160 Kb of HTML, including contributions from over 50 ex-HPites.

The material was converted to the HPAlumnipedia in May 2007 to put it in a more central, permanent location; to expand the scope to any topics of interest related to leaving HP -- due to layoffs or other reasons, from any site -- and for easier shared authoring by multiple interested people.

Note well that attributions (quotations) attributed to individuals before Feb 2007 were "ported" from the old webpage, and do not mean that person edited the HPAlumnipedia directly to add what you see here. Also, the previous webpage was written in "first-person" style by Alan Silverstein, meaning a lot of material is now attributed by name, where it is not purely factual, to set the stage for future edits by many contributors.

Alan Silverstein, Fall 2002:

Why did I start this page?

  • To organize my own thoughts and record my experiences. (Like a weblog but more structured.)
  • A desire to help others in the same situation (too dang many of us, a real bumper crop since the Compaq merger). It turns out I was a relatively "early adopter"...
  • A desire to stop repeating myself verbally (grin).
  • Because I saw the need and it was not otherwise being addressed.

Disclaimers

  • Caveat emptor: Nothing whatsoever in this website is authoritative. When in doubt check with the appropriate authorities or your own consultants.
  • Publicly visible: By design, nothing in this website should be considered private, or even just limited to ex-HPites. Authors should seek to be helpful and accurate while avoiding injury, insult, or even disparagement (grin). (The "grin" here relates to the non-disparagement clause of the Release Agreement.)
  • Non-profit: This website is about having fun sharing useful information. It has no commercial purpose and is not intended for any.

Overwhelmed?

Alan Silverstein, Fall 2002:

My single experience says there's an enormous amount of trivia associated with cleanly disentangling from any professional job... Lots of stuff to read, understand, and do... And now here's this set of articles adding to the pile... What can I say? "Take what you can use and let the rest go by." -- Ken Kesey
